Wrap-Up Insurance Program
Controlled insurance programs, commonly known as wrap-ups, is a popular risk management technique generally used on large scale construction projects. It consolidates the insurance coverage for the general contractor and all tiers of subcontractors working on a project into one program that is negotiated, purchased and managed by a single sponsor. Wrap-up insurance programs usually include general liability/excess liability and workers' compensation/employers' liability. Additional coverages may also be purchased. Such programs are seen as a way to control costs while broadening coverage and unifying safety controls and claim handling.
A coordinated safety and claims management program is crucial for the success of these wrap-up programs. Claims management starts before the first claim occurs and should be part of the planning team once the program is purchased. This provides an opportunity to discuss expectations and procedures with the claims adjusting team, identify medical clinics, emergency preparedness and return to work initiatives, to name a few.
Claims management oversight on a wrap-up program differs from a more traditional insurance program in that all contractors admitted to the program benefit. This is especially true with their Workers Compensation coverage as the experience modification follows each contractor regardless of the type of insurance program that is in place.
